  • During his pre Formula One career, he participated in events such as the 1989 Japanese Formula 3 championship, 1990 European Formula Opel Lotus Championship, 1991 Formula Opel Lotus Euroseries, and 1995-96 Japanese Formula 3000 championship.
  • Shinji Nakano’s Formula One debut came at the 1997 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne for the Prost Grand Prix team which was owned by the legendary 4-times Formula One World Champion Alain Prost.
  • He was later dropped off of Prost Grand Prix in favor of Jarno Trulli and joined the former Italian automobile racing team Minardi for the 1998 season.
  • For the 1999 season, he was an occasional test driver for the Jordan team.
  • He participated in the Champ Car World Series for Walker Racing and Fernandez Racing and made 56 starts from 2000 to 2002 with the best points finish of 17th in 2002 and the best race result of 4th at the 2002 Molson Indy Toronto.
  • For Beck Motorsports, Shinji Nakano started 15th in the 2003 Indianapolis 500 and finished 14th.
  • With OAK Racing, he competed in the 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans and returned to the event the following year with the Boutsen Ginon squad.
