June 2024 · 3 minute read

After a brief fight with cancer, Kamar de Los Reyes, who voiced Raul Menendez in the “Call of Duty: Black Ops” video game franchise and played Antonio Vega on the soap opera “One Life to Live,” passed away at the age of 56. However, it wasn’t clear which cancer he was battling.

At the time of his death, de los Reyes was at work on All American and had recently shot a role in Hulu’s not-yet-released Washington Black, starring Sterling K. Brown. He also has a significant role in Marvel’s upcoming Daredevil series.

His publicist confirmed that he was married to Sherri Saum, his former co-star on “One Life to Live.” Sherri and Kamar got together while working on the One Life to Live movie.

The characters they portrayed in the soap opera were romantically involved with each other.

The couple lived in Los Angeles.

The actor grew up in Las Vegas after being born in Puerto Rico. Early in his career, he had several successful theater roles and made appearances in films such as “Nixon,” “Salt,” and “The Cell.” However, his career took off on television.

He got his start in the 1994 series, The Valley of the Dolls.

Following his stint on the series, he also starred in some films, including The Cell and Salt.

More recently, he had recurring roles on “Sleepy Hollow” on FOX, “The Rookie” on ABC, and “All American” on the CW. In addition to filming “All American,” he was involved in upcoming projects like Marvel’s “Daredevil” series and Hulu’s “Washington Black.”

Saum and her two sons, Michael and John, ages nine, and Caylen, age 26, survive De Los Reyes.

In 1995, de los Reyes made his debut as Antonio on One Life to Live in Llanview. His persona was that of a former gang member who became a lawyer and police officer after serving an unfair prison sentence for a murder committed in self-defense.

De los Reyes departed the drama during the day in 1998, but he came back in 2000 and stayed on until the show was canceled in 2013.

In the Call of Duty video games, he portrayed the vicious Menendez, a terrorist and arms dealer from Nicaragua who harbored a deep hatred for the United States. These games were released in 2012, 2018, 2019, and 2021.

In a 2012 interview, he stated, “I walked away from this experience knowing that I had just finished work on one of the most amazing projects I have ever been a part of.”

Born on November 8, 1967, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, de los Reyes was raised in Las Vegas. He was the youngest of three sons and one of five children overall. Famous Cuban percussionist Walfredo de los Reyes is his father.

He relocated to Los Angeles and found employment as a dancer in the Salsa (1988) film directed by Boaz Davidson.

He appeared with Patrick Stewart as Prospero in 1995’s The Tempest and as the Irish-Mexican boxer Pedro “Roadman” Quinn in Blade to the Heat, both directed by George C. Wolfe for public theater.

He was featured in People magazine’s “Fabulous 50” list in 1997, and starred in the 1994 syndicated series Valley of the Dolls. Moreover, in 2000, he dated Toni Braxton for her “Spanish Guitar” music video.

Apart from his acting career, Kamar gained prominence for his role as Menendez in the Call of Duty video game series.

“I’m grateful to be given this opportunity,” he said.

A number of his fans took to social media to mourn Kamar’s death. On social media, someone posted, “Rest in peace, Kamar de los Reyes, who plays Coach Montes.” Another fan wrote – “Prayers to his wife, Sherri, and their children.
